ABOUT THE ROLE

The Health and Safety Coordinator leads the delivery of Council’s occupational health and safety (OHS) function, working collaboratively with management and staff across the organisation to build and sustain a strong safety culture. The role provides specialist expertise and advice in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Council’s OHS management system, policies, procedures, and practices, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and best practice standards. Reporting to the Director People and Performance, the Health and Safety Coordinator supervises the Health and Safety Field Officer and acts as a key resource for managers, supervisors, Health and Safety Representatives, and employees on all OHS-related matters.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Advise, mentor and support our senior leadership team
  • Enable all staff to adopt a safety first culture through proactive initiatives and actions
  • Lead and shape Council’s safety culture
  • Influence real change across diverse work environments
  • Manage audits, regulators and complete investigations
  • Interpret data to improve safety outcomes
  • Demonstrate sound business acumen including prioritisation and budgeting
  • Work closely with the chair of the Occupational  Health and Safety committee to implement our Health and Safety strategy
  • Prepare and present reports to executive and the Audit and Risk committee

ABOUT YOU:

  • Demonstrate experience in the coordination of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in OH&S
  • Experience as a trusted advisor and the ability to influence people
  • Knowledge of OH&S legislation, frameworks, policies and industrial frameworks
  • Strong communication and stakeholder skills – ability to build credibility.
  • Proactive continuous improvement mindset
  • Sound judgement and professionalism to manage confidential and sensitive matters
  • Collaborative approach
  • Local government experience (desirable)
